Event display guide

Pull-up banner vs X-banner.

Compare setup, floor space, transport, graphic protection and presentation before choosing your next portable event display.

Quick answer

Choose a pull-up banner for frequent use, compact placement and protected transport. Choose an X-banner for a budget-conscious, lightweight campaign where extra floor depth and careful graphic storage are manageable.

A portable banner may be the first branded element people see at a conference, expo, retail activation or community event. Both formats can introduce the business, direct visitors or explain an offer, but their hardware changes how they travel, how much space they use and how polished they look.

A pull-up banner is a retractable display. The print stores inside its base, pulls upward for use and connects to a support pole. An Economy X-Banner uses a collapsible frame with the graphic held under tension at its corners. It has no protective cassette.

Choose a pull-up banner for repeat use and presentation

A pull-up is generally the stronger choice for a team attending regular events. It has a compact footprint, opens and packs down quickly, and reduces handling of the printed surface between uses. It suits an evergreen message such as a company introduction, service overview or core product benefit.

It also works well in receptions, beside speaking stages and in client-facing displays where visible hardware should be minimal. If the banner will travel between venues or be handled by different staff, the self-contained format makes the routine easier.

3A Print produces its pull-up graphics on high-quality PET film for strong colour and a flat, professional display. The material also helps resist the edge curl often seen on lower-grade banner media.

Choose an X-banner for economy and changing campaigns

An X-banner can suit a one-off promotion, a short event season or a campaign needing several displays in different locations. Its tension-frame construction is simple and lightweight. On many systems, the graphic can be replaced independently, but a reprint must match the exact frame size and fixing positions.

The trade-off is protection and floor depth. The graphic needs careful storage, and the frame may be visible from behind. It works best where visitors mainly approach from the printed side and there is enough space behind it.

Treat either lightweight system as an indoor display unless the specific hardware is approved for outdoor use. Doorways, open loading bays and windy sites can destabilise them. For outdoor placement, consider a purpose-built A-frame sign.

Design for people in motion

A banner is not a brochure enlarged to floor height. Visitors see it while walking and scanning several stands. Use one headline, one supporting idea and one action. Place the business name or main message high enough to remain visible when people gather in front, and use strong contrast.

If you add a QR code, link it to a mobile-friendly page and include a short instruction. Keep important text, logos and QR codes away from the cassette area on a pull-up and from corner fixing points on an X-banner. Always use the template for the exact hardware ordered.

What to prepare before ordering

  1. The event date, venue and whether the display is indoors.
  2. Available floor area and the direction visitors will approach from.
  3. Number of stands, transport method and expected frequency of reuse.
  4. Whether the message is evergreen or campaign-specific.
  5. Final wording, vector logo, brand colours and suitable images.
  6. The destination URL for any QR code, checked on a phone.

Ask for the finished size, template, safe area, bleed and preferred file format before designing. Check names, dates, phone numbers and URLs at final size, then have the event owner approve the proof.

Simple recommendation

Use a pull-up for portability, repeat use and a more enclosed presentation. Use an X-banner when economy and light transport matter most.

Common questions

Which banner takes less floor space?

A pull-up normally has the more compact footprint. An X-banner’s rear support leg usually needs extra depth.

Can the graphic be replaced?

Replacement depends on the exact hardware. X-banner graphics are commonly separate, while cassette replacement on a pull-up may need assessment. Always match the original stand dimensions and fixing system.

Can I use either stand outdoors?

Not by default. Lightweight portable stands can become unstable in wind. Use outdoor-rated hardware or choose signage designed for exterior placement.
